Yoga Philosophy: Patanjali's Yoga Sutras
3-Part Summer Series with Glenna
Part 1: September 10
Exploring The Yoga Sutras: What is yoga?
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (100-1000CE) are the first texts where we see a manual for the practices of yoga. Patanjali, teacher and author, compiled the practices of yoga and developed them into an 8-part system. These texts are one of the greatest influences on modern yoga. This workshop will look at The Sutras through the lense of the tantra (the philosophy that dominated India 550-1250CE). We will explore the definition of yoga as offered by Pantanjali and what it means to our practice today. Bring a journal. Come ready to listen and share in conversation, asana, pranayama, and meditation. (Reading your favorite copy of The Yoga Sutras is recommended, but not required).
Part 2: October 8
Exploring The Yoga Sutras: The Yamas
Yoga is often referred to as an 8-fold path. These 8-limbs of yoga are first shared in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This workshop will explore the first of these eight limbs, The Yamas, also known as behavioral restraints or external virtues. We will discuss what these five yamas are and what they might mean to our practice today. Bring a journal. Come ready to listen and share in conversation, asana, pranayama, and meditation. (Reading your favorite copy of The Yoga Sutras is recommended, but not required).
Part 3: November 12
Exploring The Yoga Sutras: The Niyamas
The 8-limbs of yoga are first shared in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Niyamas are the second in the 8-fold path of yoga. However, they are not often discussed in a modern yoga class. Niyama, known as internal restraints and observances, are five of the greatest tools for any yoga practitioner. This workshop will contemplate Pantanjali's meaning of the niyamas and how we can honor them in our daily practice and life. Bring a journal. Come ready to listen and share in conversation, asana, pranayama, and meditation.
